A Basic Guideline for Direct Investing

A family office moving into direct investments needs a sequence it repeats on every deal. The order below is a starting point, not a recommendation for any specific investment.

A simple sequence

  1. Decide what you will do. Asset types, deal sizes, regions, holding periods and whether you lead or follow. See what a deal flow strike zone is.
  2. Build sources. Peers, operators, intermediaries and your own network. See Part 10.
  3. Screen fast. A short first screen that kills most deals early. See what family offices look for before investing.
  4. Diligence the people as much as the numbers. Track record, alignment and references.
  5. Approve by rule. An investment committee or written approval limits. See Part 11.
  6. Review after closing. Compare results with the original thesis.

For the reasons families invest directly at all, read why family offices prefer direct investing.
